Keeping it Simple - Fruit
Previous Word: Sin
Read - John 15:1-11
Review - Fruit may seem like a bit of a silly word to include in a study on difficult words of the Christian faith. I mean, who doesn’t know what fruit is!?!?! Just in case, the most common definition of fruit: the sweet, fleshy product of a tree or plant that can be consumed. In the Christian faith, “fruit” has similarities but also core differences. Biblical fruit is character, actions, and results in and through us for good kingdom impacts. Producing, bearing, receiving, and consuming fruit are all biblical concepts.
For God, we produce and bear fruit. Where producing fruit is the outcome of the work we do for God, bearing is the fruit God produces through us. This is the best kind of fruit. To optimize our ability to produce good, healthy fruit we are to remain in Jesus. In John 15 we see how crucial it is to remain in Jesus so we can bear the most fruit in our lives.
From God, we receive and consume fruit. The fruits of the Spirit are a gift from God. Galatians 5:22-23 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” When you choose Christ as your Savior, you are gifted with these fruits and are to use these fruits in your life.
We are called to bear good fruit through using the gifts God has given us. Take time to think about the fruit you are producing in your life across all of your relationships and activities.
Reflect - Am I producing biblical fruit in my life and if not, what needs to change?
Remind - John 15:1-2 - “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
